An angel investor is a person who invests money into someone else’s business deal. This definition does not include "friends and family”.
For the purposes of membership qualification of the VentureAlberta forum, angel investors are:
Accredited*
and
Write checks to invest in private deals – typically early stage growth companies.
*An investor must meet the Accredited Investor requirements of the Alberta Securities Commission to become a member of the VentureAlberta Forum Investor Network.
Accredited Investor - Includes financial institutions, pension and investment funds, corporations with $5 million in net assets and certain high net value individuals. An individual will be considered an accredited investor if he or she, together with his or her spouse has:
- Financial assets (cash and securities) exceeding $1 million, or
- Pre-tax net income of at least $300,000 (or $200,000 without a spouse) in each of the last two years and a reasonable expectation of exceeding that amount in the current year
